  2. 1. Some search tools you can use to find information are search engines such as Yahoo, Google or Bing.
    2. An index is used for specific information. Indexes analyze every word of a web page to get a more exact result. A directory is used for a more general search. It will give you results that are related to your topic but not specifically linked.
    3. You would use an index if you were doing a biography on a person and you would use a directory if you were looking for general information on an animal for example.
    4. I currently use an index like Google. That is what i prefer because it is more specific and matches your search word for word.
    5. There are many ways to refine your search, you can specify on what kind of file you are looking for, key words, words you don't want, language, and reading level.

  3. The internet has pretty much infinite information. With so much, how can you find what you want? The easy way is to use search engines. Search engines search the entire internet for items related to the keywords you typed in.

Directorys (Such as Yahoo!) are good at identifying general information. They classify websites into catigories. Indexes (Such as Google) search search the entire content of a website to find specific information. Indexes use spiders and robots to analyze billions of web pages. Some also index audio, video, and images.

You would use an index to search for a specific topic and if you would prefer to refine your search. You would use a directory to search for museums, accounting firms, universities, ext.

I use google. I prefer it because it helps you find specific information that you need.

You may refine your search using Google's advanced search. Say you are looking for information on China. Just searching China will get you billions of results. But with Google's advanced search you can narrow it down. If you don't want information on China's tax rates and you are getting a lot of search results about that, you should type "China" - taxes.

2.The difference between an index and a directory is that an index will identify texts on web pages of a website that match your search, even if it has nothing to do with what you’re looking for. Indexes also use software programs called spiders and robots that search the internet. Directories are good to use to search general information; directories organize websites into categories. When you search something, your results are going to be in a list of websites relating to your search term.
3.You would use an index if you are looking for specific information such as someone’s biography and you would use a directory if you are looking for general information like historical museums.
4.I currently use Google, a web index. I prefer a web index because I find it easier to look for what I’m searching for. It gives me results for what I’m looking for word-for-word.
5.Some ways to refine your search would be to at quotation marks around the word or words your searching for. Another way to narrow down your search would be to add (+) or subtract (-) words from your search results. You can also choose the type of document you want your results in.

  6. Some of the search tools you can use to find information are Google, Yahoo!, and Bing. These search engines are broken down into two types: directories and indexes. An index searches all the contents of a website using software programs that scour the Internet. A directory classifies websites into categories, and the results will be a list of websites related to your search topic. You would use an index to find specific information, such as biographical facts about a person. You would use a directory to identify general information, such as looking for museums. I currently use Google, which is an index. I prefer to use indexes because it gives me more detailed responses and I believe it is easier to find. There are many ways for you to refine your search. These include using quotation marks, typing in keywords, or identifying a certain language, reading level, or file type.

    5. There are plenty of ways to refine your search. For example if you wanted to look up black panthers, you would get a million different sites. So to make your search come up all about the animal you'd put qotations around it. If sites are still comming up for anything but the animal you'd do this.. "black panthers" -comics (or whatever else is popping up.)
